Different patterns need different evaluation
Headaches have many possible causes. A recurring headache, a new pattern and head pain associated with neck symptoms should not all be given the same label. Migraine also has features that deserve a separate discussion.
Bring a useful history
Write down how often headaches occur, how long they last and what accompanies them. Bring a list of medications and any previous diagnoses or investigations. Tell Dr. Koser if the pattern has changed or the headache interferes with work, sleep or ordinary activities.
Where a neck evaluation can fit
Tell Dr. Koser if headaches occur with neck pain or movement difficulty. He considers the pattern, examination and any medical assessment you’ve already had before discussing clinic care or referral. Headaches have several possible causes, so a neck finding is considered in that wider context.
When to seek emergency help
Call 911 for a sudden, extremely severe headache, or a headache with new weakness, trouble speaking, confusion or loss of vision. Fever with a stiff neck also needs urgent medical attention. Do not wait for a routine chiropractic appointment.
Before you visit
Your questions, answered.
Should I mention headaches at a neck appointment?
Yes. Mention the headache pattern, associated symptoms and any medical assessment you have already had. That information may change the next step.
Are headaches and migraines the same thing?
No. Headache is a symptom; migraine has a more specific pattern and needs an appropriate diagnosis and management plan.
