What does contract-relax mean?
You gently contract a selected muscle, then relax while the clinician guides the next part of the stretch. The position and effort should be explained to you. This is a guided technique, not a direction to push through pain.
Start with the movement you find difficult
Tell us which position or activity feels restricted and whether it is painful. Dr. Koser considers that information alongside the examination before selecting a stretching approach. Feeling tight does not by itself tell us what needs treatment.
Keep the effort manageable
Dr. Koser explains how much effort to use and guides the movement for your session. Tell him if the stretch is painful or brings on new symptoms so it can be adjusted. Ask for instructions before trying the technique on your own.
Use it as part of the bigger plan
When stretching is part of your plan, we explain the movement we’re working on and how it relates to your daily activities. It can accompany progressive corrective exercise or other care. Your response helps us decide what to continue or change.
Before you visit
Your questions, answered.
Is this offered at the clinic?
Yes. Dr. Koser provides contract-relax stretching when it fits the individual assessment.
Should stretching hurt?
Tell your clinician if the stretch is painful or brings on new symptoms. Do not assume you need to push harder to make progress.
