When a back problem reaches your leg.

Aching in the back is one thing. Pain, tingling or weakness traveling into a leg raises different questions about the nerves.

What is lumbar radiculopathy?

Lumbar radiculopathy refers to symptoms or changes in nerve function associated with a nerve root in the lower back. Pain may travel into the leg, and numbness or weakness can occur. A herniated disc is one possible cause; an examination helps narrow down the explanation.

How is that different from sciatica?

Sciatica is a common description for a pattern of pain traveling down the leg. Radiculopathy focuses on the involvement of a spinal nerve root. The terms overlap, but a leg-pain description alone does not confirm where the problem is.

Check sensation, strength and the history

Dr. Koser performs neurological and orthopedic testing and considers relevant imaging. Tell him if walking has changed, your foot feels weak or symptoms are spreading. Bring the actual reports if you have them; a remembered label like “bulging disc” leaves out useful detail.

Discuss the appropriate next step

If conservative care fits your findings, Dr. Koser explains the role of decompression, chiropractic care or individualized exercise. Changes in strength, sensation or walking can change that recommendation. Some findings need more testing or another clinician, and we’ll discuss that next step with you.

Do not wait on these changes

Seek emergency care for new bowel or bladder dysfunction, numbness in the saddle or groin area, or rapidly progressing leg weakness. These changes need urgent medical assessment.

Before you visit

Your questions, answered.

Will decompression fix a pinched nerve?

No individual result can be promised. Decompression may be discussed after the examination; it is not appropriate for every cause of leg symptoms.

Can I just start the back exercises online?

A general exercise list cannot tell us why you have weakness or numbness. Have those symptoms assessed so the starting point is appropriate.
